Activists urge Google to break up

Shareholder activists want Google parent Alphabet Inc to break itself up before regulators force the world’s biggest internet ad seller to split into different pieces.SumOfUs, a U.S.-based group that aims to curb the growing power of corporations, is set to make that proposal at Alphabet’s annual shareholder meeting on Wednesday at an auditorium at the company’s offices in Sunnyvale, California.“Officials in the U.S. and EU continue to be concerned about Alphabet’s market power in view of restrictions on monopolies.“We believe that shareholders could receive greater value from a voluntary strategic reduction in the size of the company than from asset sales compelled by regulators.”The proposal has no realistic chance of success as Alphabet’s top two executives, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, hold 51.3 per cent of shareholder votes.Nevertheless, it shows a growing focus on the prospect of antitrust action against Alphabet and other big technology firms such as Facebook Inc and Amazon.com Inc as they face a political and public backlash over privacy issues and the power they now wield over the world’s information.U.S. President Donald Trump has been a frequent critic of Google, claiming without evidence that its search engine unfairly produces results unfavourable to him.He suggested that U.S. regulators should follow Europe’s lead and look closely at tech companies’ monopolies, but had not suggested any specific remedy. The U.S. Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission are gearing up to investigate whether Google, Amazon, Apple and Facebook misuse their massive market power, sources told Reuters earlier this month. The breakup proposal is one of a record of 13 on the ballot at Alphabet’s Wednesday meeting.A group of Google employees is backing five of the proposals, which it helped craft, but not the proposal to split the company.Tibetan and Uighur ethnic group leaders concerned about Google’s work in China are among speakers expected to speak at demonstrations outside the auditorium before the meeting. Community activists pressing Google to address housing shortages in Silicon Valley also planned to rally.Alphabet said in shareholder materials its existing policies address issues raised in the proposals and declined to comment further.Although none of the proposals is likely to pass, Google may respond to issues raised. The company stopped working on a censored Chinese search engine and banned use of its artificial intelligence tools for weaponry after petitions from employees and outside activists.“We started as a voice in the wilderness on some of these issues, but conversations have come more to the fore,” SumOfUs campaign manager Sondhya Gupta said.

Former Ado Local Government Chairman Sentenced To Prison In Ekiti State

An Ado Ekiti State Magistrate’s Court has sentenced a former Chairman of Ado Local Government, Mr. Taye Fasuba, to six months imprisonment over unlawful entry into a land and malicious damage to a property.Senior Magistrate Omolola Akosile, in a judgment delivered on Monday, found Fasuba guilty as charged in two of the three-count charges before the court and sentenced him to six months imprisonment with an option of N20,000 fine on each of the two counts.Police Prosecutor, Insp. Monica Ikebuilo, had told the court that Fasuba, who is former Special Assistant to former Governor Ayodele Fayose on Union Matters, committed the offence on January 14, 2018 at Moferere area, Ado Ekiti, in the Ado Ekiti Magisterial District.Ikebuilo had said Fasuba, on the said date“did unlawfully enter into the land which is in actual and peaceable possession of one Catherine Ashowo and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 81 of Criminal Code Cap C 16 Vol 1 Law of Ekiti State of Nigeria 2012.” The prosecutor also said he “did maliciously damage fence wall properties of one Catherine Ashowo valued at N350,000 and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 451 of the criminal code Cap C 16 laws of Ekiti State of Nigeria 2012”. Ugonna Orji: Air Peace’s soaring growth

What is surprising many Nigerians is how Air Peace grew within a space of five years to become Nigeria’s largest carrier with over 25 aircraft in its fleet and set international operations. The airline, which started operation in 2014 with seven aircraft has not only increased its fleet but has also made firm order for Boeing and Embraer latest jets in accordance with its strategic growth plan, this investment complements theeconomic development efforts of the government.Air Peace records a total of 90 flights a day and it is the airline that has the most connections to domestic destinations. Two years after the airline started operations, it increased its fleet from seven to 13 and recently acquired six short-haul aircraft; Embraer ERJ 145 and four Boeing B777 for long haul destinations.Today Air Peace has over 3,000 direct employees and has created over 6,000 indirect jobs for Nigerians. The chairman of Air Peace, Allen Onyema, said he was motivated to establish an airline because he wanted to create jobs and help in national development.“I went into aviation to create jobs. I love touching lives,” Onyema said. The airline has provided jobs to Nigerians from different parts of the country as pilots, engineers, members of cabin crew, ground staff, administrative personnel and many othersAs the airline expands its operations, it continues to create jobs and as it adds another aircraft in its fleet, it creates more jobs. The airline maintains a robust financial status and has over time, built integrity in international aviation circles because it always pays its bills whether to suppliers, insurers, aircraft maintenance companies and others. The airline in April this year set a continental record with a firm order for 10 brand new Embraer 195-E2 aircraft. This made Air Peace the first to order the brand of jets in the whole of Africa, thereby becoming the official launch customer of the brand of aircraft in the continent. In order to ensure that the airline operates well-maintained aircraft, Air Peace engaged a maintenance company in the UK, BCT Aviation, which has been maintaining the aircraft in the airline’s fleet.“Another thing I did was to outsource my maintenance to a British company so that I can assure the safety of my fleet. It is very expensive, it comes at a very high cost but I needed to do it. Another thing I decided to do was ensure our pilots must be very top notch; they must not be just any pilot. We must pay well to get the best, so that was what we did,” Onyema said.So the airline’s fleet is well maintained that it has gained the confidence of air travelers who patronise it because of its efficient service. Within this short period, the airline has grown in the number of fleets. As the airline has built integrity, banks are willing to partner with it and this has helped in the acquisition of a new fleet.“The banks are there to support us. We want to reduce the cost of Nigerians flying abroad; Air Peace will give them what those legacy airlines are giving them and even better service at a very, very affordable cost. This is because Nigerians have been shortchanged for years now.“Nigerians should look forward to Air Peace starting international operations. But we need government to support us. I am not asking government to give us money, we need government to make it easy for us to get to where we want to be,” Onyema said.Air Peace deserves much kudos.Ugonna Orji writes from Abuja

Court adjourns Masari’s case over alleged N107.7m fraud

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, has adjourned to July 2, for continuation of hearing in the case involving the former Director General, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), Bature Masari.Masari is under prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, before Justice Okon Abang.Allegations preferred against Masari were on a 17-count charge bordering on money laundering and primarily emanating from the stated whooping sum of money.EFCC spokesman, Tony Orilade, said this in a statement and explained that Masari’s initial arraignment by the Commission was on May 27.He added that one of the charges reads: “That you Bature Umar Masari on or about the 27th November, 2014, at Abuja within the jurisdiction of the honourable court did transfer the sum of N9, 000,000 (Nine Mllion Naira) only, to one Benjamin I. Aboho, from your Diamond Bank Account No.0041899190, when you reasonably ought to have known that the said money formed part of the sum of N50,000,000 (Fifty Million Naira) only, paid to you as gratification by Hamshakin ventures Ltd and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 15(2) (6) of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act 2011 as amended by Act No. 1 of 2012 and punishable under Section 15(3) of the same Act”.It also reported that at the resumed hearing yesterday, Justice Abang asked the defence counsel, Abubakar Mogaji, to furnish the court with the document upon which he relied on to object to the evidence of the prosecution at the last hearing. But Mogaji, it was learnt, disclosed that he had unfortunately misplaced the document and therefore withdrew his objection. He, however, pleaded with the court to move a motion on the abuse of court process which the judge had already ruled.Yet, the prosecution counsel, Iheanacho Ekene, objected to the plea, arguing that the matter had become “functus officio”.In his ruling, Justice Abang adjourned the case to July 2 and October 8 for continuation of trial.

2023 presidency: Apologise to Amaechi now

A socio-cultural organization in Rivers State, the Ikwerre Youth Movement, IYM, has called on the 2019 vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Peter Obi, to apologise to former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi. The youths pointed out that if Obi could not condemn former Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha’s statement that Igbo presidency does not exist, then he should apologise for attacking Amaechi over a similar comment. The former Minister had said that for Igbo to be successful in their quest for 2023 presidency, they must play national politics.Reacting, Obi said Amaechi lacked political relevance in Rivers, adding that the former Rivers State Governor cannot determine the fortune of the South-East in the 2023 presidential race. However, Okorocha had, after his inauguration into the National Assembly, advised leaders of South-East to reach out to other regions if they must produce a President in 2023.In their reaction to the development, Chairman of IYM in Emohua, Sir Lucky Worlu, urged Obi to condemn Okorocha on the statement or apologise to their son, Amaechi, immediately.Worlu maintained that what Amaechi said was the true position on how the South-Eastern region would produce a President in the next four years, urging Ohanaeze Ndigbo to commence consultations early.
