Abuja – Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) in Nigeria have called for creation of enabling environment to ensure cost recovery and further drive investments in the nation’s power sector. The Chief Executive Officer, Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED) umbrella body of DisCos, Mr Azu Obiaya made the call at a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) seminar in Abuja on Tuesday. The seminar had representatives of Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Generation Companies (GenCos) and multilateral institutions. The DisCos had been directed by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to submit their PIP which would be a key input for major review of electricity tariff – the Multi Year Tariff Order (MYTO) 2020 expected to take off by January.Obiaya said the DisCos were not against re-capitalisation as being speculated in some quarters.“Rational investors will need to see a pathway of recovering their investment for them to make the leap.“It is my hope that the PIP guidelines, if implemented faithfully, efficiently and consistently, will provide this pathway, as necessary to re-orient the sector towards commercial viability and sustainability,” obiaya said. The Head of Trade and Economic Section of the European Union (EU) Delegation, Mr Filippo Amato, said the programme was designed by the French Development Agency (AFD) and financed by the EU.He said PIP programme valued at 2.3million euros (about N929.5 million) was being implemented by ANED with technical support from AF Mercados. He said the electricity supply industry in Nigeria was recording a loss at a growing rate of N1.3 billion daily.“Nowadays, the average operational capacity of the grid that hovers around 4,500 MegaWatts (MW) and 5,500MW, cannot meet the needs of a growing population and industrial users,” he said.Amato said the seminar, would enhance the Discos’ strategic planning efforts and provide modalities for the upcoming PIP over the next five years.AF Mercados Team Lead for the Capacity Building and Technical Assistance Programme (CaPTap) Mr Jose Guerra, said the DisCos had improved their revenue collection in spite of the harsh market conditions. He said the Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) allowed DisCos by NERC was not enough to invest in meters, transformers and the entire networks.Guerra said that six minor tariff reviews carried out has not been applied by NERC, adding that another minor tariff was imminent, “I hope they apply it this time,” he said.Dr Joy Ogaji, Executive Secretary, Association of Power Generation Companies (APGC), said the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) was faced with various challenges. She said the Generation Companies, GenCos, were mostly at the receiving end of the challenges faced in the sector.Ogaji said despite the challenges, the GenCos had over 7,500 MW available capacity, adding that there had been 75 per cent increase in power generation since the GenCos took over in 2013.She said the unclear implementation of payment agreements to the GenCos by the market participants was affecting the GenCos ability to pay their gas suppliers. This, she said had resulted in huge liquidity challenge to the GenCos. …Wants fringe political parties de-registeredBy Dirisu YakubuABUJA – National chairman of the Zenith Labour Party, ZLP, Dan Nwanyanwu, Tuesday, advised President Muhammadu Buhari to within the next 30 days transmit a list of his ministerial nominees to the Senate for confirmation, to avoid what he called a repeat of what played out in 2015 when he waited for about five months to constitute his cabinet.Nwanyanwu gave the advice shortly after the party’s National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting in Abuja. According to him, President Buhari must imbibe the lessons of recent history by ensuring that no time is wasted in his second term in office.Addressing newsmen at the party’s national secretariat, Abuja, the ZLP boss noted that Nigerians were anxiously awaiting the transmission of the ministerial list to the Senate following the successful inauguration of the 9th Assembly last week.He said: “We expect President Muhammadu Buhari to do better than he did during his first tenure as it relates to the time to constitute his cabinet. We are expecting that in the next 30 days, he should be sending the list of his ministers to the Senate for confirmation. I do not think Nigerians are in a position to wait as long as that (five months) again. I believe he has learned a lot lessons and I am sure he will not keep us waiting more than necessary. Nigerians are expecting that if not before the end of June, by early July, his list of ministers should be with the National Assembly.”He also called for competence as the overall determining factor in the appointment of ministers, warning that giving ministerial positions to people without a proven track record of performance may spell doom for the nation.“We expect to see patriots, people with knowledge and who are determined to work for this country. We do not want ministers who just want to sit down and answer the title, ministers. We want people with capacity and he (Buhari) should ensure that those key critical areas of our development like economy, health, housing and transportation, are given to well tested people who are ready to sacrifice for this nation. We can no longer take excuses.“The President has gotten all he wanted in the National Assembly. He is controlling both Houses. He has no reason to give Nigerians excuses anymore as to why he will not perform or why he did not choose good and credible Nigerians, whether they are in the All Progressives Congress, APC or in other parties. Once Nigerians believe those people have the capacity to perform, he should take them on board. He is now the President of everybody. I am not unaware that there are some people in the leadership of APC who may want everything to come from APC even when they know that they do not have everything as we have tested them for four years. The President should not go that way,” he added. On the call in some quarters for de-registration of some political parties that failed to make impact in the 2019 elections, Nwanyanwu said the development will help sanitize the political space even as he berated some parties for laziness, waiting only to line up behind candidates of well established parties in exchange for monetary incentives. While saluting Nigerians for their participation in the elections, Nwanyanwu however lamented that the polls “did not reflect a marked improvement on the standards established in 2015.”The NEC was attended by key party functionaries including former Ondo state governor, Dr. Segun Mimiko.
Former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan have been cautioned against jeopardizing the country’s existence in a bid to propagate their selfish agenda. Some concerned Nigerians gave this counsel in a letter signed by Rev Musa Fomson and Prince Raymond Enero, Convener and Secretary respectively and addressed to the former leaders.According to the group, the comments of the pair has reached the head and can no longer be condoned.ALSO READ:Read full letter below:Your Excellencies, please permit us to extend our heartfelt and warm greetings to you. And may we also congratulate both of you on the June 12, 2019, Democracy Day celebration. We believe President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR took the appropriate steps by redefining and normalizing Nigeria’s most suitable date for the commemoration of our Democracy Day.We all celebrated in grand style, as we fondly remembered our struggles for the entrenchment of democracy in Nigeria with the Late Chief MKO Abiola as the national and international symbol of this historic date. And we pray God Almighty to bless and protect every Nigerian leader who has either benefitted from democracy or have had the opportunity to lead us under a democratic government. We especially salute you, our former leaders for the rare privilege to lead Nigeria, a nation of over 200 million people. Leadership is a great burden and whether you discharged your responsibilities to the Federal Republic of Nigeria (FRN) responsibly as the exigencies of the time demanded or neglected it, we cannot say more than to thank each one of you for the service to fatherland. However, we have certain observations to make publicly your thoughts on national issues in a manner that is unbecoming of former Nigerian leaders. We have observed that you often plant landmines directly or indirectly on the path of the incumbent Presidency through inciting and derogatory public comments. It is becoming unbearable for the rest of us to bear and we thought it wise to let you know. You had the golden opportunity to lead Nigeria, and in Chief Obasanjo’s case even twice. So, we cannot discern why you should decide to overtly or clandestinely to ensure that President Buhari is not allowed to also use his wisdom in the leadership of this great country and be held accountable for his actions or inactions?Vanguard

Pound euro exchange rate: Latest GBP Sterling movementFigures released today revealed that the annualised UK Consumer Price Index (CPI) hat a rate of 2.0 percent in May, down from the previous month’s 2.1 percent. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed that the small drop was driven primarily by transportation prices. It said: “Falling fares for transport, particularly air fares influenced by the timing of Easter in April, and falling car prices produced the largest downward contributions to the change in the rate between April and May.” This also means that average wages, which have risen by 3.4 percent in the last year, continue to outpace inflation.Meanwhile, the UK Producer Price Index (PPI) jumped by a higher-than-forecast 1.3 per cent in May. Yesterday the pound euro pairing rose when disappointing German data dampened sentiment in the single currency. Figures from ZEW revealed that German economic sentiment slumped to -21.1 in June, the lowest since November 2018. Professor Achim Wambach, ZEW President, knew where to pin the blame for the weak result: “[The] intensification of the conflict between the USA and China, the increased risk of a military conflict in the Middle East and the higher probability of a no-deal Brexit are all casting a shade on the global economic outlook.”
