CAF Champions League: Kotoko coach: We didn’t des…

The mind game continues as the second leg of the CAF Champions League preliminaries between Nigerian flagbearer Kano Pillars and their Ghanaian foes, Asante Kotoko whom they defeated 3-2 in the first leg a fortnight ago draws nearer.Kotoko coach, Kjetil Zachariassen has reiterated that his club did not deserve to lose the first leg to Pillars. The Porcupines Warriors were beaten 3-2 at Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano last time out even though they enjoyed a 2-1 lead until the 70th minute. However, the former Ashgold head trainer says they have been training hard and believes they will get a good result on Sunday.“We did our best in the first game and I still believe that we should have picked up at least a point,” Kotoko’s Norwegian manager told the Caf website in an interview, even though points are not awarded during this stage of the tournament.“It was a very difficult game but that is in the past now. We have been very serious in training since we returned and the players are responding to the tactics.”Kotoko went 2-1 up in Kano, having converted two set-pieces in the second half but veterans Rabiu Ali and Gambo Mohammed got crucial goals for the hosts to win the game 3-2.Going into Sunday’s second leg, Kotoko are hoping to surpass their performance in their last appearance in the Champions League when they suffered a first-round elimination at the hands of Algerian club MC El Euma in 2015.

Red Star odyssey continues with dramatic draw at Young Boys

By Brian HomewoodBERN (Reuters) – Red Star Belgrade’s Champions League qualifying odyssey continued on Wednesday when the former European champions drew 2-2 away to Young Boys after being pegged back by a late penalty in the first leg of the playoff round tie.Russian side Krasnodar, who eliminated former European champions Porto in the last round, were thumped 4-0 at Olympiakos while Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb beat Norway’s Rosenborg 2-0 in ties which will earn the winners a place in the lucrative group stage. In a gripping match, Red Star fell behind to an early goal, then hit back to lead 2-1 before Young Boys substitute Guillaume Hoarau levelled with his first touch of the ball. While the Swiss side had qualified directly for the playoff round, Red Star battled their way through three rounds, overcoming opponents from Lithuania, Finland and Denmark with the last tie against FC Copenhagen going to a remarkable 22-penalty shootout. Both teams took part in the group stage for the first time last season and it was Young Boys who went ahead in the seventh minute when Roger Assale was sent clear of the defence and the Ivorian forward drove his shot past Milan Borjan.Milos Degenek levelled 11 minutes later with a looping header at the far post which caught goalkeeper David van Ballmoos out of his ground.Borjan made three outstanding saves to keep Red Star level at halftime and they went ahead immediately after the restart.Marko Gobeljic sent in a low cross from the right and Argentine Mateo Garcia turned it in at the far post for a goal on his debut. The drama continued as Nicolas Moumi Ngamaleu burst into the Red Star area and went down under a challenge from Richmond Boakye. Daniel Podence produced a neat dinked finish for the fourth.Dinamo Zagreb’s hopes of qualifying for the seventh time got an early boost when Marius Lundemo bundled over Bruno Petkovic who converted the penalty himself in the eighth minute. The Croatian champions added a second with a route one goal as goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic’s clearance came off the head of a defender and fell into the path of Mislav Orsic who shot under Andre Hansen.(Reporting by Brian Homewood, editing by Ed Osmond)

‘Eddie, Eddie!’ – Arsenal legend Ian Wright shows Nketiah love after Leeds United winner...

Ian Wright knows a thing or two about scoring goals for Arsenal - and Eddie Nketiah looks as though he might be doing the same in the very near future.Nketiah is highly rated at Arsenal, but such is the competition for places in Unai Emery's squad that the 20-year-old striker was sent on loan to Leeds United for the 2019-20 season to gain valuable experience and playing time. The forward got off the mark for his new club in the EFL Cup at Salford City last week, but made an instant name for himself at Elland Road on Wednesday night by coming off the bench and netting a late winner as Leeds returned to the top of the Championship with a 1-0 victory over Brentford. With former Arsenal striker Wright watching on from the stands, the Gunners loanee was sent on for his Championship debut in the 77th minute in a bid to find a goal. And just four minutes later, the 20-year-old tapped home from Helder Costa's cross to ensure Leeds leapfrogged Sheffield Wednesday to the summit.Following the match, Gunners legend Wright tweeted a video of himself chanting: "Eddie, Eddie, Eddie!" following the win, with the caption: "Eddie Eddie!!!!!!!!!"Arsenal congratulated Nketiah on Twitter, writing: "Another game, another goal [...] It took @EddieNketiah9 just four minutes to get the winner after coming off the bench for @LUFC tonight".If Nketiah carries on going like this, it won't be too long before he's following in Wright's footsteps for Arsenal.

Messi ‘made me better player’, says Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo admitted on Wednesday his long-time rivalry with Lionel Messi has made him “a better player” and that he enjoys a “healthy” rivalry with the Argentine great. However, Portuguese star Ronaldo, whose influence at Real Madrid mirrored that of Messi at Barcelona before he left for Juventus, admitted that the pair have never socialised together.“I really admire the career he has had and from his side, he has already talked of the disappointment when I left Spain because it was a rivalry that he appreciated,” Ronaldo told TVI in Portugal.READ ALSO: On-loan Nketiah fires Leeds back to top of Championship“It’s a good rivalry but it’s not unique — Michael Jordan had rivalries in basketball, there was Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost in Formula 1. The thing they all had in common is that they were healthy rivalries.”Ronaldo and Messi have won the coveted Ballon d’Or five times each, a factor that helps each player flourish.“I have no doubt that Messi has made me a better player and vice-versa. When I am winning trophies it must sting him and it’s the same for me when he wins,” he said.“I have an excellent professional relationship because we have been sharing the same moments for 15 years. He added: “We’ve never had dinner together but I don’t see why we can’t in the future. I don’t see a problem with that.”VANGUARD
